I’m Caleb Whitefield, counsellor and therapist in advanced training. I offer therapy sessions for adult individuals across Edinburgh.

Going through times in life when we feel overwhelmed, confused, or dissatisfied can be very painful. This is when we may need support, rather than going it alone, to understand more about ourselves, what’s happening for us, and begin finding a way forward. The safety, care, and support available in therapy can register with us on a deep level, and bring about more ease, confidence and enjoyment in how we live.

My intention is to hold a space of warmth and compassion in which you feel safe and supported to explore your experiences. I help you manage your thoughts, feelings, and actions with greater ease; get to know yourself more deeply; and choose how you would like to live your life. Building a sensitive, respectful relationship together, in which you feel seen, heard and understood, is the heart of what I do.

I see therapy as a partnership in which we work together for your well being. We will go at your pace, safely and respectfully, to make sense of the thoughts, feelings and issues you would like to address. I will listen closely and look to support you each step of the way. My style is down to earth and conversational, I won’t assume a knowing expert role or hide behind a “therapist” mask. We’re in this process together, so I will bring myself genuinely, and I invite you to do the same. Together we will deepen our understanding of how you relate and respond to experiences in your life. This shared listening and awareness can support growth and open up potential for new ways of being and relating. My approach is based on compassionate, respectful, and ethical therapeutic practice. I am guided by the UKCP code of ethics.

Issues I work with include:

  • Attachment & relationships

  • Self-esteem & low confidence

  • Anxiety & panic attacks

  • Grief & loss

  • Stress & burnout

  • Family relationships & conflict

  • Depression & low mood

  • Sense of direction & purpose

  • Trauma & C-PTSD

  • Addictions

What Happens in a Session?

  • I will always be looking to support and encourage compassionate awareness of how you are thinking, feeling, and behaving.

  • I will be curious about, and respectful of the strategies you have used to survive throughout your life. We may explore the extent to which these still serving you - what other options might be available to you?

  • We might explore parts or aspects of yourself that you may have denied, pushed to the side, or kept out of awareness.

  • We will look to include and make space for your whole self, all aspects of you, so that those parts of you that perhaps haven’t had enough care or attention, can get more of what they need, and feel welcome, rather than denied or rejected.

  • We can think about ways you can manage and soothe difficult thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

  • We can look at ways you might take care of yourself and have your needs met, especially in situations that can be challenging for you.

  • We may look at how you experience specific relationships. How far do these relationships meet your needs? Do you have an assigned role; could this be different? How might you find support, connection, and fun with other people?

  • We may use mindfulness or pay attention to your embodied experience/physical sensations - we may experiment with movement, or techniques to calm and soothe your nervous system.

  • We may explore themes of identity: cultural, religious, sexual, or your sense of your identity more broadly.

  • We may use creative techniques: writing, drawing or visualisation for example.

  • We may explore what you want from life, from seemingly small details to overarching life ambitions, and think together about how best to go about creating this.

I also have a special interest in working with shame, male identity, and self-esteem issues.

I am currently offering reduced rate sessions at £40 whilst I am working towards qualification and accreditation with the UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy) with whom I hold membership. I also have a number of lower fee spaces, we can discuss this if you would like.

You are welcome to get in touch with me by phone, text or email to arrange a free introductory call. This allows us both to begin to get a feel for whether we are a good fit, and to understand more about what you are looking for from therapy.

I am in regular supervision, a member of the Disclosure Scotland PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) scheme, and I hold professional indemnity insurance.
