People seek out therapy for many different reasons. They may enter therapy for one reason, but stay for another; or they might return to therapy at different points in their lives for very different reasons.
What might be bringing you to therapy now …
You may be going through changes in your life, big or small, that are affecting how you feel. You might be experiencing intense or unusual thoughts, feelings and sensations which you need help to understand or sort through. You may be feeling alone and unsupported. Perhaps there are aspects of your experience or ways that you relate to the world that you sense could be different. You may want to understand yourself and your relationships on a deeper level. You might be curious about your own potential, and how to live the fullest life you can.
Gestalt therapy can offer you a different kind of experience; it can offer you a place to explore, experiment and discover…
Through the relationship we create together we can come to understand the ways in which you might show up in your relationships in a habitual way, and the ways which you are creative in how you respond. As awareness grows, we can begin to recognise the support that is already available to you. This means getting to know your own strengths and vulnerabilities. It also means noticing where, in your environment, you find ground: the people, places, or practices that replenish and energise you. The relationship we create together will be influenced by us both, and we will work together to understand how the patterns are showing up moment to moment as we meet.
Through fostering curiosity about what is happening in the session, we might come to know aspects of your experience which you have not been aware of before, or you might come to understand them differently. We might do this by paying attention to thoughts, feelings, embodied sensations or movements. We might also attend images or metaphors which arise, as well as noticing how we each respond to one and other at different points in our sessions.
About Me …
I came to train as a therapist after many years of working with children impacted by poverty, addiction, poor health, and unemployment, and who had experienced trauma in various forms. The children that I worked with, and their families, taught me how awareness and relationship can bring about healing and change; and this changed me!
I find support as a therapist through regular supervision, and I undertake regular reading and training to support my ongoing professional development. I am a member of the GPTI and the UKCP and work in accordance with their ethical code and code of practice. I am also committed to my own therapeutic journey and continue engage in regular therapy, myself.
I am dedicated to honouring your unique experiences and understanding how they have shaped you. These could include situations you are navigating right now, or experiences echoing from childhood. I care deeply about honouring difference, and acknowledging my privileges where I have them. This is part of my own ongoing journey. I am a white, Scottish cis-woman with working class roots. I am passionate about human dignity and hope you will experience this should you choose to meet with me.
Outside of my practice, I enjoy walking and taking in nature, pottering in the garden, and reading. I love dancing, music and being artsy - though I do this for pleasure rather than for being talented! I am interested in current and global affairs and sometimes feel the impact of them deeply.
If reading about me and my approach resonates with you and you are curious about what this kind of exploration could offer, I welcome your interest. I would be pleased to arrange an initial consultation.
